The first Oppie training session got off to a flying start this weekend with 10 young sailors taking part. Sunday was a cold morning with a gusty Northerly breeze complicating matters – this being the least favoured wind direction for getting off the jetty.
The kids had an instructors briefing and a quick refresher on the boat simulator prior to the sailors taking to the water in the wonderfully sheltered area between the lock pontoon and the shore. Olivia and Matt – instructors for the day – laid some marks for the sailors to practice some reaching and close hauled work which most of the kids achieved in a variety of styles.
Parents were briefed on the approach for the Season at the beginning of the day and in the final briefing session the kids did a self assessment on how they felt they rated according to the IOCA Level 2 criteria. For a first session in difficult conditions it was a great start.
There is After School Sailing on Friday 29th from 5-7pm and another on Friday 13th April. The next Oppie Training day Sessions are 22nd and 28th May.
