Chichester Yacht Club win Bass Cup !

It was a busy weekend at Chichester YC with the second day of the Bass Cup against Dell Quay SC on Saturday followed by the start of the CYC Birdham Barrel Series on Sunday incorporating Bart’s Bash. The two days could not have been more different weather & wind wise.

Saturday was a cool overcast day with a tricky north-westerly wind, blowing an inconsistent Force 5 for the most part. Race Officer Roger Millet placed committee boat Cyclone between Chichester YC & Dell Quay just south of Copperas Point, setting a figure of 8 course. This led to a tight start line due to the proximity to Copperas Point, and some close quarter jousting at the start line resulted. The wind continued shifty, and seemed to come from different directions on each leg of the course! Chichester YC started the racing in the lead after races 1-3.

Race 4 was dominated by the single handers, with CYC’s high wind specialist Ian Payne taking 1st in his Laser, finishing ahead of many ‘faster’ boats. 2nd was Mark Harper (CYC, Solo) and 3rd David Maltby (DQSC, Solo). In Race 5, all the first three boats were from CYC. The two-man boats finally got a look-in with Paula & Michal Olliff first in their 2000, followed by Mark Harper & Ian Payne, again in the top 3. In Race 6 it was the turn of DQSC to lead the racing, with David Maltby first & Simon Verzall (Solo) 2nd. CYCs Ian Payne continue his top placing to finish 3rd, winning the series.

Many thanks to CYC’s Roger Millett for running the event in such testing conditions.
