Royal Yacht Squadron and Island Harbour Cruise Report

On Monday morning we all set off for Cowes at a civilised hour with light westerly winds, which picked up later to a good sailing breeze. We arrived at the Royal Yacht Squadron Haven at various times in the afternoon, with a few boats berthed elsewhere in Cowes due to lack of space. Those in the haven were squashed in well.

We had the run of the facilities in the main castle building and those by the pavilion during the afternoon. In the evening we were welcomed into the building and given a brief history and tour before having drinks and then the buffet meal. The setting for the meal in the Platform Room was atmospheric and they served an excellent meal followed by tea and coffee served in the entrance hall. For most it was a first visit and memorable experience.

On Tuesday morning a group of 10 boats made their way up to Island Harbour and entered on freeflow. After lunch we had a stroll up to Newport and back enjoying drinks at the Quay Arts Centre by the river. In the evening we had a pontoon party before making our own arrangements for dinner, though with the amount of nibbles provided by everyone, there was little room for more.

On Wednesday morning everyone went their own way. Thanks go to all who signed up for the cruise and made up the minimum number for the RYS buffet.
