Don’t miss our talk on The History of Chichester Yacht Club, Sunday 13th October at 10.30am

Presenters: Chris Lane and Tony Mobbs

Have you ever wondered about the origins of your club? Then this presentation is one not be missed!

The origins of CYC have always been cloaked in mystery and intrigue. However, after many years of detailed research and investigation this can now be revealed.  Surprisingly the origins of CYC can be traced back to nearly 100 years ago. During this time, the Club has survived a World War, a financial crash and a global pandemic to become one of the most successful clubs in the harbour.

This month’s winter lecture traces the history of CYC from its humble beginnings with a few boats berthed in Chichester Canal to the thriving, active club of today. The history will be told through the stories of the individuals and characters concerned who helped establish, develop and shape the Club.

“Together with various acts of bravery and seamanship.”

Chris Lane

Chris Lane joined CYC in 1998 so he’s very much the new boy on today’s team! He became RC Yachts in 2001 and later as RC House established the Sunday Carvery. Later Chris was a member of the project team which steered the Club Development Programme which gave us the new Dinghy Area Quarter Deck and finally the Upper Deck. Chris currently sails Lowenna, a Crabber 26 moored in Chichester Marina…previously he’s owned two Westerly yachts and Molly Oxford, a traditional Gaff Rig Cutter.

Tony Mobbs

Tony Mobbs first came to CYC in 1978 and became an active member of the Dinghy Section, representing the section twice as its Rear Commodore. He has always been a keen dinghy racer and was also part of the very popular Snowflake Race Management Team for over 20 years. Recently Tony served on the Club’s General Committee from 2013 to 2022 taking on a number of director responsibilities including Vice Commodore and the Club’s Commodore through the pandemic years. Tony was also the Club’s IT Manager for over 30 years.
