Socials: CYC Ramblers Arun Valley Walk, Burpham & North Stoke
Arun Valley Walk, Burpham and North Stoke
The walk is 4.5 miles, starting at The George in Burpham, good public car park behind the pub and in the village, avoid blocking entrance drives. Riverside in character with downland to follow.
The walk leads left from the pub dropping down after a narrow lane to cross a low lying meadow. The River Arun is on your left, the path is narrow, so any dogs should be supervised in case they fall into the river. A stile guards the railway level crossing on both sides. The river is kept to the left, after South Stoke across the river. Cross the white suspension bridge to reach North Stoke village, where you turn right along a lane. After 400 yards, fork right through bridle gate by a farm gate and follow an unfenced track which drops down and continues along the foot of a tree covered slope rising up to the left.
After 2/3 mile, at a meeting of several paths, go ahead over a stile and follow a steep, stepped, path uphill. This is quite hard work! At the top, turn right along a chalk and flint track with great valley views across to Arundel and the coastal plain. After Peppering High Barn the track becomes a road. Fork left and after another 270 yards, go right along a headland path to Burpham. The church is to the left and the lane leads to the pub.
Meet at 0930 for 1000 start, time expected 2.5 hours, 20 places booked at pub for 1230 – Christmas menu, I must confirm a week before.
