Socials: CYC Ramblers – Beacon Hill and Elsted
Meet at Three Horseshoes car park, Elsted, GU29 0JY at 9.30am for a 10.00 am start. OS Explorer Map 120, GR 818195. Cars should park closely, but it’s a big car park.
If the car park is full the village is free of yellow lines.
The walk goes south along a minor lane for about 1/4 mile before becoming a broad track across a flat field for another 1/4 mile.
At the bottom of the South Downs scarp, we climb through the steep beech woods to the South Downs Way for another 1/4 mile or so.
We turn right at the top and climb a steady slope for 1/2 mile to Beacon Hill which has fine views north across the Weald to the North Downs.
We carry on west down a slope to a cross track and turn right down the steep wooded beech scarp. This track is called Telegraph Lane and is another 1/2 mile to the minor road, where we turn right at walk for about 200 yards on a verge to another right hand bridleway. We walk along this route for a mile, which its flat and skirts the edge of another beech wood.
We are now at a point we reached on the outward route which is half a mile back to the pub car park.
The walk has gates, not stiles and the pub welcomes dogs. Walkers will need to order in advance, but the menu will probably be different to what is publicised now.
The pub can give us 26 seats in the dining room, and we are booked for 1.00pm which should be plenty time for the four mile walk. The pub closes at 3pm which should be sufficient for a winter Saturday.
