Shore Based Training

Chichester Yacht Club offer the RYA Essential Navigation and Seamanship Course and the RYA Day Skipper Theory Course, as well as a range of Club Shore Based Theory Sessions.

RYA First Aid, VHF and Radar courses are periodically offered in partnership with other RYA Training Centres to provide members with the necessary skills for going afloat.

RYA Essential Navigation and Seamanship Course

This introductory 2-day course provides a basic knowledge of navigation and safety and is ideal for all water users. The course covers topics including:

  • Charts
  • Safety
  • Tidal awareness
  • Navigation
  • Pilotage

RYA Day Skipper Theory Course

A pre-requisite for the RYA Day Skipper Practical Course, this course provides sufficient knowledge to enable navigation around familiar tidal and non tidal waters by and is ideal for aspiring skippers and those with crewing experience. This course covers:

  • Seamanship
  • Coastal navigation and pilotage
  • Chartwork
  • Electronic charts
  • Position fixing
  • Plotting a course to steer
  • Weather forecasting and meteorology
  • Tides
  • Collision regulations

Club Shore Based Theory Sessions

These half-day Club sessions are ideal to brush up on skills and new techniques as well as an introduction to different aspects of crewing and helming. Sessions may cover:

  • Tidal Heights
  • Tidal Streams
  • Pilotage
  • VHF Practice
  • Planning a Cruise
