Yachts: Newtown Creek
This late season trip to Newtown Creek will, weather permitting, provide an ideal opportunity to enjoy the natural delights of Newtown both afloat and ashore. In past years we’ve had lunch at the Shalfleet Inn on one occasion and a picnic at the entrance on another. There’s also a good RSPB centre and hopefully the old Town Hall may have been reopened too this year.
Sailing down on Friday afternoon’s ebb tide enables us to arrive in daylight and gives us the whole of Saturday to explore. Skippers may decide to return on the morning tide on Sunday or perhaps tarry a day or two more in the Western Solent before coming home. Most members will already be aware that Newtown offers the option of mooring buoys in the Shalfleet river or anchoring in Clamerkin Lake…subject to draft in certain places!I It’s a unique gem in the Solent totally devoid of marina facilities but with plenty of resident seals, birds and walking trails. A dinghy is advisable to get ashore!
