Yachts: CYC ‘Around the Cans’ Race to Portsmouth & Pursuit Race Home

This year we have added in an additional race weekend to incorporate the Pursuit Race. The general plan is to do a short course ‘around the cans’ style race to Portsmouth on day one. We have overnight berthing in Gunwharf Quays with a group dinner in a local pub with an amazing view over the Portsmouth harbour Entrance. The following day we will use the positions from Day One to determine the start times for the ever-popular Pursuit Race finishing back at Chichester.

The Pursuit race is unusual as instead of everyone starting at the same time, the race is run in reverse with each boat have its own start time. The idea is that we should all finish at about the same time. This obviously relies heavily on boats sailing to their handicaps, and the rather dodgy maths of the Racing Secretary, however nothing encourages you to tweak your sails more than the sight of a boat fast approaching your stern. It has also been known for some boats to arm themselves with buckets of water to dissuade any wannabe overtakers.
