The Optimist Class has many enthusiastic members amongst the Junior members of Chichester Yacht Club. The Optimist is a great boat for youngsters to start sailing in. The Optimist is a very stable boat, and is perhaps the boat in which most children start their sailing career. Ben Ainslie sailed one for a number of years and competed in three World Championships!
We currently have a growing number of keen Optimist sailors at the club. The more experienced are now actively participating in fun racing at the club and a few open meetings whilst others are concentrating on honing their skills.
In 2020, there is the introduction of a Novices’ racing series which are a great way to get in to racing.
On Saturday 17th October, we are pleased to be hosting an open meeting for the Optimist class. Details of other Optimist Class Association Southern Area events can be found here.
Optimist sailors are encouraged to join in the Youth Training that we offer at CYC, and have Optimists to hire if you don’t yet have a boat.
Sessions are split in to Fun on the Water sessions for those who want to get out on the water and practice, and Fun Start to Race sessions for those wanting an introduction to racing in a fun environment.
Race Development sessions are on offer for those who want to practice more advanced racing techniques, and are recommended for those who have completed Start to Race camps or who are competing in Club races.
Each year, we hold several Start to Race camps, including as part of our Easter Camp and during Dinghy Week. These are a great way to spend the holidays and enjoy the social side of sailing.
