CYC Optimists get 1,2 at WSSYSA

The WSSYSA regatta was held at Dell Quay Sailing club. a team of 16 sailors from Chichester Yacht club left the beach at CYC to sail “around the corner” to the race area south of Dell Quay. There had been much preparation for the event with parents and coaches providing safety boats and coach boats to accompany “Team CYC” to the event. Martin Orton attended the briefing at Dell Quay then quickly made his way to CYC to repeat the racing instructions.

At 12:00 the flotilla of young sailors left the beach with coach and safety boats in attendance, leaving the beach team to wait for news.

The Wind on Saturday was fresh, building through the afternoon to approx 20  knots leading to a number of capsizes and some retirements with equipment failure. Unfortunately the weather on the Sunday was significantly worse so the organisers wisely cancelled the racing.

The results for the event were very good, with the Thomas Dempsey and Effie Grant winning the optimist fleet, Thomas recorded a very impressive two firsts and a second (discarded), while Effie challenged him with a first and a second.

In the Topper Fleet CYC Sailors Oliver Randall-May and Thomas Lawson, sailing under their school banner (Seaford College), managed 4th and 5th place, with Charlie Gran taking 6th and Lily Speed 8th.

Our one entry in the senior fast fleet, Alex Sayers, recorded a very impressive 6th place.

Full results can be found on the Dell Quay Website.

More Photographs from the event will be posted to the Club Yogile Page.
